B/R Editor in Chief Joe Yanarella: Find a gap in the industry (video)

Bleacher Report Editor in Chief Joe Yanarella was in the San Francisco office this week, visiting from New York, so I sat him down in front of the B/R Blog cameras for a short talk about what it takes to become a successful sportswriter in today’s media, whether at B/R or somewhere else.

“Find a niche, a gap in the industry,” Joe says. “Find something that doesn’t exist and really fill in and become an expert.” He also advises building your personal brand and—sorry about this if you’re looking for a short cut—work hard.

“There are many talented people out there, but the ones who are the most successful are the ones who tend to get better, be on a trajectory,” he says. “And to do that, it takes a lot of repetition, like any craft.”

Pro Tip: Don’t pull the race card when you get rejected. Take constructive criticism and hone your craft. Take ownership in your work and don’t blame someone else when things don’t go your way. Most people with paid gigs at B/R worked their way up.
