Jan 3 2009

Once again, our congratulations go out to Justin Goar, this year’s b/rCS champion. We are thrilled to be able to reward his great writing with an all-expense paid trip to the BCS National Championship.

You can catch Justin’s title game coverage starting this week on Bleacher Report. He will also be reporting from Miami on Wednesday and Thursday, as Florida and Oklahoma battle for college football’s ultimate prize.

We encourage all Bleacher Creatures to post questions, comments and recommendations on Justin’s board. He plans to field and respond to as many “mailbag items” as possible during his stay.

On behalf of our college football community, we wish you good luck and a great trip, Justin! We know you’ll represent us well!

Presenting “Creature Vs. Creature”

Here at the Bleacher Report office, we pride ourselves on thinking up clever ways to enhance the finest Community of passionate sports fans on the web.

Yet increasingly more often, we’re finding that many of the best ideas come from the Community itself.  Which of course makes perfect sense, considering that B/R’s top contributors probably use the site ten times more than us working stiffs in suits (okay, okay…more like T-shirts and jeans…)

The latest development in this regard personally excites the living daylights out of me.  I’ve always loved the idea of collaborative writing—whether it be Round Tables or Q & A’s, there’s nothing quite like multiple expert analysts putting their skills together and continuing to push the envelope for what is possible in world of sports citizen journalism.

I’m pleased to announce that we have a brand new method for writer collaboration on Bleacher Report:

Presenting Creature Vs. Creature, a Justin Goar creation.

The Concept: two Bleacher Creatures go head-to-head with opposing viewpoints of an upcoming game.  They write their breakdowns in separate articles, then link the two articles together.

The Format:

1) Find a fellow Creature who’s a fan of the team you are squaring off against this weekend.

2) Both of you construct mirroring articles that offer a fan’s take on the upcoming battle.  Suggested formatting is as follows:

  •  Title the Piece Creature Vs. Creature ____________________ (create your own subtext, and make sure it’s clear to the reader which team you are representing).
  •  Use the following bolded headings to guide your analysis: Game Preview, {Team 1} will win if…,{Team 2} will win if…, X Factor, Prediction.
  •  Give your fellow Creature a link and a plug to their opposing piece at the bottom of your article.

Examples: LSU/South Carolina, LSU/Florida

As always, don’t hesitate to let me (or Justin) know where you have questions.  Can’t wait to see this take off!

New and Improved Writer Rankings

Aug 14 2008

Hey guys,

So as I’m sure you’ve already noticed, we’ve made some adjustments to the way that Writer Rankings are calculated.

Before I begin responding to all of your individual inquiries, I thought I would address the Bleacher Report Community at large and explain the nature of the changes that were made and the reasons for these alterations.

We strongly believe that these tweaks have the best interest of the network in mind, and hope you understand that even if you fall a couple spots in the rankings that this is more than made up for by the fact that you will be part of a fairer, more credible community of fan journalists.

Let’s also not forget that the rankings are dynamic!  With a little bit of extra effort in areas where you’re weaker than your peers, you can skyrocket yourself past where you were previously.

Without further ado, the changes:

Change #1: Breaking up the article count monopoly

We’ve been receiving feedback for some time that too much weight is given to the number of articles written in determining the site’s Top Writers.

While we’ve always felt that the number of articles a member writes is quite a telling statistic, there are others that are also highly reflective of the value that a given contributor adds to the network but which before now were underrepresented.

You know the old saying: it’s not quantity, it’s quality.

Well in this case, it’s quantity, quality, and popularity of your contributions that will determine your fate in the Writer Rankings from here on out.

The average star rating that your peers assign your articles now plays a significant role in your ranking, as does the number of fans you accumulate throughout your Bleacher Report tenure.  The number of comments you write has also risen in significance.

Your article total still counts enormously towards your ranking, but it no longer monopolizes it the way it used too.  We’re sharing the wealth, so to speak—allowing the network’s most popular writers and active commenters to have a legitimate chance at the top slots.

Change #2: New restrictions on who is eligible to be displayed as a Top Writer

Bleacher Report has always been a meritocracy—the members that add the most value to the Community earn the site’s top honors.  After taking a cold hard look at the overall site rankings and league/team based rankings, it was clear that all too often highly valued contributors were being knocked down the list in favor of less deserving candidates.

Before now, a blogger who syndicated their feed onto the site but hadn’t logged in or participated directly in the Community for an extended period of time was still eligible for a top slot in the overall site rankings.  Their high article count would then elevate them over members who contribute regularly to the Community.

We’ve thus added some eligibility criteria to being included in the team, league, and overall site rankings.

For league and team pages, members who have not logged into the site or written in over a week will temporarily fall off of the Writer Rankings.  As soon as that member logs in or writes again, he will appear on the list again in his rightful place.

The same goes for the overall site rankings—inactive contributors will no longer be displayed as Top Writers until they are active again.  In addition, members who have written fewer than 10 articles or fewer than 20 comments will be similarly ineligible for ranking until they have passed these milestones.

As always, we encourage you to provide general feedback on the new changes in the comments section below.  If you have questions about your specific situation or believe you have spotted an error, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me directly.

Thanks as always to all of you for making Bleacher Report the groundbreaking sports network that it is today.

Alan Bass Releases Hit Single “Wake Me Up When Burke and Lowe Are Friends”

Jul 12 2008

Two months ago, a high school senior by the name of Alan Bass joined the Open Source Sports Network as an outlet for his hockey obsession.

Alan has since catapulted himself to the #4 of spot on the Top Writers list, passing B/R veterans who’ve been working their magic for years.  So young in his Bleacher Report career, Mr. Bass has shown unprecedented engagement with the site’s Community, finding the time to publish 188 articles and nearly 700 comments while holding his own as the Leader of the Philadelphia Flyers page.

It’s obvious that Alan can write about and discuss hockey till the cows come home, but what recently came as a surprise to me is to see his fine talents as songwriter.  Yesterday Alan recorded a song (with some help from Green Day) reflecting upon the tragic war of words between Ducks General Manager Brian Burke and Oilers General Manager Kevin Lowe.

The single “Wake Me Up When Burke and Lowe Are Friends” has since taken the pop charts by storm—if you haven’t yet heard it on the radio, make sure to catch it in its entirety on youtube.

Way to go Alan!

Wow, what an amazing week it’s been for Bleacher Report’s international community!

First, Formula One freak Michael Griffin lands an interview with McClaren Driver Lewis Hamilton at Silverstone—then, World Football Community Leader Salaar Shamsi finds his way into a press conference with new Chelsea Head Coach Felipe Scolari at the Hilton Hotel in Cobham.

These milestones raise the bar yet again for the possibilities of Bleacher Report’s devoted writers. We’re learning every day just how much potential the Creatures have for success at the highest levels of sports media.

Congrats to Salaar and Michael for working diligently to give themselves these amazing opportunities!

Joe Willett Hooks Up With Hoops4Life.com

Joe Willett joined Bleacher Report just six months ago. A seventeen year old high school student, he came to the site looking to get involved in an online community where he could show off his basketball expertise and engage in discussions with like-minded fans.

Little did he expect that just a short time later he’d be one of the Open Source Sports Network’s rising stars. Joe has published 131 articles and 904 comments to date; he assumes the post as Chicago Bulls Community Leader and is known for regularly speaking his mind on how to improve Bleacher Report’s site offerings.

Some very good news has come Joe’s way recently, as Hoops4Life.com has offered to pay him to write about his favorite sport. How about that—this kid’s getting his first professional writing gig before his high school diploma. I wish I was that cool when I was seventeen…

The sky is the limit for Joe. We wish him all the best with Hoops4Life and are excited to see that he is more engaged in Bleacher Report than ever before.

Jun 26 2008

ESPN Radio Talk Show Host and longtime Bleacher Creature Adam Amick has plans to host a weekly show featuring contributors from the web’s fastest growing sports network.

Adam did a test run last night, which from all accounts was a wild success. Adam recaps the night’s events in this article, while St. Louis Cardinals Community Leader Ben Weixlmann reflects upon how a radio show could further add to the unique user experience that Bleacher Report provides sports fans.

We’re working with Adam as we speak to explore ways to further integrate radio into the network and schedule/promote the new show. Updates will be posted both on the blog and the Bleacher Report Radio page—stay tuned.
