Jan 3 2009

Once again, our congratulations go out to Justin Goar, this year’s b/rCS champion. We are thrilled to be able to reward his great writing with an all-expense paid trip to the BCS National Championship.

You can catch Justin’s title game coverage starting this week on Bleacher Report. He will also be reporting from Miami on Wednesday and Thursday, as Florida and Oklahoma battle for college football’s ultimate prize.

We encourage all Bleacher Creatures to post questions, comments and recommendations on Justin’s board. He plans to field and respond to as many “mailbag items” as possible during his stay.

On behalf of our college football community, we wish you good luck and a great trip, Justin! We know you’ll represent us well!

Final b/rCS Standings: Goar No. 1, Followed by Ghost, Tate

Dec 9 2008

The top two teams in the BCS, Oklahoma and Florida, will meet in Miami on January 8 for the National Championship Game.

And Bleacher Report college football writer Justin Goar will be there to take it all in, by virtue of his No. 1 ranking in the final b/rCS Standings.

Goar wrapped up our season-long competition with 464 MyPicks votes, B/R’s metric for article of the day nominations. His “Weekly Brain Seepage” became must-read material for college football fans, and he also utilized collaborative “Creature vs. Creature” pieces to engage members of the community.

Bleacher Report is also proud to recognize the accomplishments of Gray Ghost and college football Community Leader BabyTate, who finished second and third, respectively. Ghost burst onto the scene with his vivid, direct, and personal writing style. BT not only gives rankings a unique spin with his “11 Best 11s,” he also consistently provides feedback and guidance for other writers in our college football section. Each will receive an apparel package for their favorite team.

Honorable mention goes to Brian Scott, Ben Weixlmann, and GeorgiaDawg, permanent fixtures in the college football community. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Thanks for making our section one of the most productive and vibrant B/R has to offer.

Enjoy Bowl Season on Bleacher Report!

Show off your “All-Anything” NBA team on B/R

Written by Rory Brown

Nov 12 2008

With the NBA season up and running, we’re looking for members of the B/R community to show off their basketball knowledge, and win some prizes in the process.

B/R is joining forces with WhatIfSports.com to ask writers to create “All-Anything” NBA teams. If you could make an NBA team that was built around one theme, what would it be? Would it be an all UCLA graduates team? An all 7-foot-tall players team? An all NBA draft bust team?

We’re looking for writers to get creative and have some fun with this, and once your article’s up, you can simulate how your team would match up against other teams through WhatIfSports.com. Just click here, and you’re ready to go.

Each person who submits articles with All-Anything teams will have a chance to win a Bleacher Report T-shirt, and everyone is guaranteed a free gift card from WhatIfSports.com to simulate how your team fares against other All-Anything teams.

Looking forward to seeing your rosters!

The Verdict on Potential Foul Play in the B/RCS

Written by Zander Freund

Oct 14 2008

Hey everyone,

Over the past few days, there have been serious concerns raised by various members of the Community regarding the rules, management of, and general fairness of the B/RCS College Football Contest.  These concerns finally reached their peak today, when site celebrity Lisa Horne published an article on the subject which soon found itself on the front page.

Before we get into the sticky details, I wanted to thank both Lisa and Gray Ghost for speaking up when something didn’t sit right with them.  These are two of our College Football Community’s most passionate contributors, and they care deeply about the integrity of the Bleacher Report network in general.

Secondly, I would also like to thank Justin Goar, who even after being accused of cheating kept his cool.  Justin was the victim of our failure as a Community staff to communicate the rules of the contest clearly to the user base.  I cannot express to him how sorry I am that he, rather than I, became the target for some people’s anger.

To clarify, Justin is without question one of the classiest gents on the site, and is in fact about to be a father.  He clearly could have done without this headache, but throughout it all he has not once tried to pin blame on others nor lost his temper.

Okay, now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the verdict.

After careful deliberation, thought, and discussion with my partners, we are standing by the rules of the B/RCS as they were originally stated.  A copy of those rules can be found here.

When you create a contest with monetary prizes involved, you have to live with the rules you set ahead of time.  Doing anything other than that is completely unfair to the participants, not to mention illegal.

As you will notice, there is nothing in the rules that prohibits writers from using the contest as a way to recruit their friends and family to Bleacher Report.  This issue was discussed during the planning of the contest, and it was decided that this could be a great way of attracting new readership to the site.

Would I change the rules to make the voting more exclusive, if I could go back in time?  Perhaps.  Lisa, Gray Ghost, Kristofer Green, Georgia Dawg, and many others make very compelling arguments for why this recruiting voters brings an element of popularity into the contest that could interfere with the most talented writer being sent to Miami.

Then again, locking the contest out to new members seems to go against the inclusive nature of Bleacher Report as an “Open Source Sports Network.”  And isn’t that inclusiveness one of the things that makes B/R so special?

Either way, the simple fact of the matter is that I cannot travel back in time, and thus I have to live by the decision that was originally made before the contest began.

I apologize profusely if the rules were in any way miscommunicated by Trey and I in the follow-up Q&A.  I will take full responsibility for this and I am truly sorry guys—it is abundantly clear that I messed up big time.

What I was trying to get at in my initial response to the question about cheating was that we put security measures in place to ensure that votes cast in the contest were credible:

  • A user has to have been a member of B/R for a certain amount of time for their vote to count, ensuring that people can’t sign up, vote, and never return.
  • A user has to have spent a certain amount of time on an article page for their vote to count, ensuring that they actually read the piece they’re voting for.
  • Votes coming from the same IP address shall not be counted more than once, ensuring that someone can’t create impostor accounts as a way of racking up MyPicks totals.
  • Our engineering team has the full ability to audit all of the B/RCS voting data and look for abnormalities should anything seem fishy or cheating is suspected…which is exactly what was done in this case.

After doing a thorough audit of the data, we have detected no foul play thus far.  As such, no action will be taken to penalize any of the contests’ current participants.

Thanks again for all of the Creature feedback during this process.  I am truly sorry for any confusion I and the rest of our staff may have caused, and I truly hope that we can put this behind us and move forward together as a Community.

Sep 26 2008

With the White Sox 1-0 victory over the Twins on Tuesday night, the MLB playoff field is finally set.

Here’s how Bleacher Report’s postseason contest will work:

1) To enter, email your picks for all three rounds, including number of games to Ben Weixlmann at bweixlmann@stlsportscenter.com.  Also predict a World Series MVP, and for a tiebreaker, guess how many combined runs will be scored in the World Series.

For example, an entry email should look like this:

Division Series
Cubs in 3
Brewers in 5
Red Sox in 3
Rays in 5

Championship Series
Cubs in 6
Red Sox in 7

World Series
Red Sox in 5

Tie Breakers
MVP: David Ortiz
Total runs scored in World Series: 25

2)  Point System:
Division Series correct pick = 3
Championship Series correct pick = 6
World Series correct pick = 9
Correct # of games = 1 bonus point (only awarded if correct winner chosen)

Correct MVP prediction = 2 bonus points
Tiebreaker = Closest to total runs scored

3)  Winner gets $100 gift certificate to MLB.com.  Runner up gets B/R tshirt.

4)  Entries must be received by Wednesday at 8pm EST.

5)  Please send all entries to Ben at bweixlmann@stlsportscenter.com.  Address all comments, questions and/or concerns to Trey at trey@bleacherreport.com.

Good Luck!

Aug 27 2008

To date, we’ve had great success with several contests in a variety of sporting communities.  But we’ve never done anything like this.

Welcome to the b/rCS—our latest, and most ambitious writing competition yet.

Unlike the BCS, our formula couldn’t be simpler.  And rest assured, the most deserving writer will end up in South Florida.

Every day from now until December 9th, Bleacher Report is keeping score.  The writer who finishes the season with the most cumulative “My Picks” votes will be sent to Miami to report from the BCS National Championship on January 8, 2009.  We’ll also be awarding some cool second and third place prizes.

Remember: only registered B/R members have access to the “My Picks” function.  So encourage your fellow college football addicts to sign up and start writing.

To enter the contest, click here.  And as always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the b/rCS, I’m available at trey@bleacherreport.com.

Good luck, and here’s to yet another reason why Bleacher Report is your home for college football coverage.

Stancill, Little Best NBA Beat Writers

Written by Trey Bradley

Jun 23 2008

After two months, four rounds, and nearly 300 articles, it was still too close to call. So Sean Stancill and Jeff Little will share top honors in the inaugural NBA Beat Writers competition.

Better than 30 Bleacher Creatures took part in the content initiative, following their NBA team throughout the postseason and attracting more than 158,000 readers.

Senior Writer Jeff Little, a Los Angeles die hard, capitalized on his Lakers’ success, providing thorough, insightful coverage from the opening round to the NBA Finals aftermath.

With his Nuggets eliminated by those very Lakers, Stancill had to take a different route, digging deep into Denver draft analysis, off-season trade possibilities, and a potential coaching change.

For their contributions, Stancill and Little each receive a $100 gift card to NBA.com.

Honorable mention goes to two Celtics writers, Sean Crowe and Andrew Palumbo, who provided great coverage of Boston’s title run.

Thanks to all who participated.

Christensen, Crowe Take NFL Draft Challenge

Written by Trey Bradley

May 1 2008

It was everything the Draft wasn’t: short, simple, to the point.

In the time it took the St. Louis Rams to decide on Mr. Irrelevant, you could have taken a crash course on the Top Five Games to Play During the NFL Draft. And to make it all the way to the David Vobora pick at 252, surely you must have been playing at least one of those games.

Out of more than forty entries, James Christensen authored the winning article in Bleacher Report’s 2008 NFL Draft Challenge. For his efforts, we’re sending James and a guest to the opening game of his choice this September.

Runner up honors go to Sean Crowe, who went for the sure thing… stoking the Raiders’ fire.

Good thinking, Sean. However, this is the NFL Draft we’re talking about, and even the best-laid plans have a tendency to backfire. Still, we’re sending an autographed, framed picture of Mel Kiper Jr. your way. He says you have “tremendous upside,” and are the odds-on favorite to win the 2009 Draft Challenge.

Congratulations to James and Sean, and thanks to all who participated.
