ESPN Radio Talk Show Host and longtime Bleacher Creature Adam Amick has plans to host a weekly show featuring contributors from the web’s fastest growing sports network.

Adam did a test run last night, which from all accounts was a wild success. Adam recaps the night’s events in this article, while St. Louis Cardinals Community Leader Ben Weixlmann reflects upon how a radio show could further add to the unique user experience that Bleacher Report provides sports fans.

We’re working with Adam as we speak to explore ways to further integrate radio into the network and schedule/promote the new show. Updates will be posted both on the blog and the Bleacher Report Radio page—stay tuned.

Call to Action: Help B/R Regular Jeff Little Achieve His Dream

Bleacher Report has taken the sports media world by storm because it gives a voice and a platform to the true fan-experts who know their teams better than anyone else. That so many expert analysts have made the network their home is the ultimate motivator to those of us who run the site on a day-to-day basis, as we strive to create the best experience and ecosystem for sportswriting anywhere on the web.

But sometimes the Bleacher Report Community gets the opportunity to do something even more exciting—to help one of our fellow Creatures achieve a dream.

That time is now for Senior Writer and stalwart L.A. Lakers and Oakland Raiders contributor Jeff Little. Jeff has achieved big things in his three months at Bleacher Report, racking up 86 articles, 36 fans, and an astounding 467 comments at present count. But now he’s going for an event loftier goal, as he wrote about in his recent article “NFL: Chasing a Dream.”

Jeff is competing to be an on-air talent / sports reporter for AM 570 in Los Angeles. Based on his body of work at Bleacher Report, he is more than up to the challenge of taking on that role. Luckily, we as the Bleacher Report community can come together to help him out by voting for him in the “Fame and Fortune II” contest.

CLICK HERE to vote for Jeff.

So the call is out to Bleacher Creatures everywhere—vote for Jeff and help him get one step closer to his dream. With your help, he can follow in the footsteps of Adam Amick, who went from being B/R’s first NASCAR writer to hosting his own show on ESPN Radio in Dallas.

And if you, like Jeff and Adam, have a dream for what you want to achieve in the sports world, then keep at it and rally the support of your Bleacher Report compatriots. With the power of the Open Source Sports Network behind you, there’s no telling how far you can climb.

Once again, CLICK HERE to vote for Jeff.

Broadcaster Makes it Big on B/R

Unlike most sports news and opinion outlets, Bleacher Report is a fans-first site. But every once in a while, it’s refreshing to be reminded that the sports journalists and analysts who cover our favorite teams are still fans themselves.

Last week, we were fortunate enough to publish an editorial from guest writer Bob Fitzgerald, television play-by-play voice of the Golden State Warriors. Fitz spends countless hours covering the NBA and brainstorming ways to make the league better. As such, we were thrilled that he chose B/R as a platform to gain feedback and exposure for his idea.

Within a 24 hour cycle, Fitz’s article on NBA realignment and playoff restructuring was the most popular and most commented article on the site—special thanks to our NBA Community for taking time to read and critique Bob’s proposal.

And a huge “Thank You” to Fitz for sharing his thoughts with us, and then going above and beyond by plugging Bleacher Report on his Bay Area radio show, Fitz & Brooks.

Rest assured: our goal is not to squeeze out the fan analyst with big name writers. But when a big name happens to be a big fan, it’s no surprise that he or she feels right at home on Bleacher Report.

Baseball in China, and on Bleacher Report

Written by Dave Nemetz

Mar 19 2008

This past weekend, MLB held its first games in China, sending the Padres and the Dodgers to Beijing for two Spring Training matchups. Bleacher Report managed to get a first row seat on the action thanks to our embedded reporter Jeff Swiryn, an American living in China who covered the games close up.

Jeff wrote a three part series covering the history of baseball in China, the lead-up to the series, and a recap of the games themselves. He’s also planning a follow-up piece looking to the future and how America’s pastime can continue to develop in the land of ping pong and Yao.

This weekend was also another first for Bleacher Report—Jeff was, to my knowledge, the first Bleacher Report writer to attend a major event as a fully-credentialed member of the press. We were able to secure a press pass for Jeff due in part to the extreme circumstances and exotic locale of the game. But I also like to think it’s because of how far the site and our community of fan-expert writers have come in such a short amount of time.

Jeff did a great job with the extra access he got at the games and filed some awesome reports, bringing the games and this historic occasion to life for the Bleacher Report audience. He also validated Bleacher Report’s mission of empowering and legitimizing the fan-expert, and set an example for what a B/R writer can do when given full access.

Getting more Bleacher Report writers recognition as members of the press is a goal we’re working hard at achieving, and something I’ll probably be writing more about in this space in the near future. (Also, to see a different take on the topic, check out Mark Cuban’s recent blog post about bloggers in the Mav’s locker room.)

In the meantime, I’ll leave you with a recording of Jeff being interviewed about the games by Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton on KLSD Xtra Sports 1360 AM in San Diego. Enjoy…

Firsthand Account: From Bleacher Report To The Radio

Written by J.J. Stankevitz

Feb 29 2008

Bleacher Creature JJ Stankevitz recounts how an endeavor to preview all 30 MLB teams led to him being interviewed on sports talk radio.

It was like any other Friday afternoon here at the University of Missouri.

Dull.

(That’s not to say life at Mizzou sucks. In fact, it’s awesome—but without football games to look forward to, this semester, by comparison, has been dull.)

I was sitting there in my second-to-last class of the day, “Principles of American Journalism,” when I casually checked my e-mail.

In my box was a message from David Nemetz entitled “Sports Talk Radio Appearance.” Thinking it was a mass-email to all BR members about a radio interview one of the heads at BR was going to do now that the site was out of beta, I opened it.

I honestly couldn’t believe the message that lay in front of me. Herb Winches of 960 WERC in Birmingham, Alabama, wanted to interview me—me—about the upcoming Florida Marlins season.

At first, I thought it was some sort of elaborate joke. Then, I thought that there was no way this was a major radio station.

But after looking at their website and show lineup, I concluded it was—because any southern radio station that carries Rush Limbaugh must be pretty big. Right?

I had been (and still am) writing previews for every single major league baseball team, and apparently somebody caught on down in Alabama and thought enough of my article to put me on air.

The weird thing is that my Marlins preview was probably the least-read of all the ones I had written up until then.

Now, I have never set foot in the state of Alabama. The closest I’ve been is Mississippi for a Missouri/Ole Miss football game last August, where I was told by one of my friends not to open my mouth in The Grove because “They’ll know you’re a Yankee.” (See: Rush Limbaugh comment I made earlier).

However, the interview went fine. I was caught a bit off guard when asked about Wayne Huizenga, but I think I pulled through okay.

It just goes to show you that anything can happen in this day and age. So, to all my fellow BR writers, keep at it. Even if your articles aren’t getting a lot of hits or comments, keep writing. BR is a great site to get your work out there, and you never know who’s reading it.

Who knows? Maybe, someday, a radio station will want to interview you.
