Quote of the Day: A cliche in the armor?

And we note that the phrase that got ESPN in so much trouble is awfully shopworn and lazy. Whether they can be misinterpreted or not, clichés are signs of a writer or speaker on cruise control—which increases the chance of a crash.

Jason Fry

Fry brings up an excellent point in his post on the Poynter Review Project Blog, which serves as an independent, ombudsman-like review of ESPN.

Interesting viewpoint. But are not clichés almost sort of like tools at a writer’s disposal only to be used sparingly? Various television tropes are similar. You’ll rarely see a TV show without various tropes. That doesn’t mean they should be used often, but a skilled writer will use them as tools to aid in getting their point across/telling their story. Maybe I’m wrongfully conflating two mediums.
